The Origin

Mt. Elgon is an extinct volcano stretching across the border of Uganda and Kenya. Its high elevations, fertile volcanic soils, and long history of land stewardship create exceptional conditions for growing specialty coffee.

This particular lot comes from 76 smallholder farmers in the Kajere community, whose coffees are brought together and processed at the Kajere Station by Mountain Harvest.

The Process

Only ripe red cherries are selected before being pulped and transferred to raised drying beds.

The coffee spends approximately 3–5 days drying in an open space before being moved into the Kajere drying shed, where drying continues until it reaches approximately 11% moisture.

Once dried, the coffee is transferred to Mountain Harvest’s temperature-controlled warehouse to rest and stabilize before milling.

This careful honey process creates a sweet and expressive cup with notes of plum, mango, apple juice, honey, and hops.

Coffee With Impact

Mountain Harvest works to build long-term economic and environmental sustainability for coffee-growing communities across Mt. Elgon.

Beyond providing processing infrastructure and quality control, they invest in farmer education and training while paying minimum prices approximately 10–30% above local market rates.

Their model helps smallholder farmers improve coffee quality while retaining more value from the coffee they grow.
